Elena Dementieva astonished everyone during the Dubai Open when she won the ninth title of her tennis career winning over her Russian fellow citizen Svetlana Kuznetsova. Demetieva beat not only the tough favorite, second seeded US Open Grand Slam champion but accomplished her victory as not even a seeded player in a field, controlling nearly every leading woman in the game.

This was Elena Dementieva’s first time in the Gulf Tournament. She amazed herself with her immediate triumph showing she has recovered of her rib injury which set her aside for nine weeks last year. This victory can help her get on track on her way back up to the world’s top ten.

"Now I realize how good I can be on the court," she said. Dementieva expresses that her victory was for her mother, Vera. "All I have done in my life - it's for her. I'm so glad she's here to share it with me. I'm so happy for her. To see her smiling is a pleasure for me."

Dementieva’s  win was covered of fine court games and rising talent mixing up the pace and good speed of the ball. However it was an erratic game with 14 breaks of serve. The first set was predominantly uninterested with seven breaks in ten games. Moreover; Dementieva’s serve was very weak; but Kuznetsova was weirdly incapable to convert her chances after having a lead of 2-0.

Kuznetsova had game points in equally the next two games. However as an alternative of enjoying the lead of 4-0 which may have permitted her a comfortable context to open up with her big takes, conversely she found herself with a 2-2 and then a 2-3 set. Kuznetsova started to make improvements with her shots in the next three games, attacking Dementieva’s susceptible second release and starting to pick more selectively her chances to get to the net.

The set ended uninterestedly with two inconsistent breaks of serve, although the second set starts more compactly. Dementieva serving improved, having more height with the throw and with the hitting feat, holding two times and breaking Kuznetsova twice guiding 4-1. She had then her moment to push on to obtain five straight games, getting to 3-0 in the final set. Dementieva played more finely, combining the pace more and pulling out driving mistakes from Kuznetsova.

Then the experience US Open champion had a small revitalization which might have twisted the match. Kuznetsova detained serve for the first time in three attempts, was offered a break-back after Dementieva had a double-faulted two times. The subsequently point lost by Kuznetsova was decisive. Within two points, Dementieva had broken down to 4-2 and with only 5 minutes she had served for 5-2 as the impetus moment moved completely around again.

"It's my first time here and it's such a big win," she smiled.

"It's the best match I have played in a long time."

Requesting how she accomplished it, she alleged: "I was playing it wrong tactically in the first set. I had to move her more and be aggressive, to mix it up but really attack her a lot."

Kuznetsova recognized that Dementieva was an exceptional player who could confront again for Grand Slam titles, although Kuznetsova believed that her personal level had drop lower and lower.

"I had my opportunities but I am very disappointed that I couldn't take them,' Kuznetsova alleged.
